Trauma NetworkZ

The Trauma NetworkZ has now been established as part of the NetworkZ programme after a successful pilot in 2018.  It identified that the underpinning team training principles of NetworkZ could provide effective training to trauma teams in the ED setting. The programme is funded by the National Trauma Network in New Zealand with ACC with sessions beginning in February 2021.

The session was developed based on the successful NetworkZ framework which involves in-situ simulation-based scenarios, debriefing and specific communication tools to improve teamwork. Historically it has been challenging to get training time allocated for simulation-based learning in the ED departments due to the uncertain nature of the workload and resourcing the sessions with both instructors and participants.

It has been established that the in-situ training creates the opportunity for systems and process improvements and this has become a major contributor to the success of the current NetworkZ programme. After consultation with each location it was agreed to conduct the training in-situ on days and times identified as having a decreased patient throughput or existing training opportunities. All DHBs agreed to run 3.5 hour session rather than 4 hours to accommodate competing clinical demands. A session can be tailored to meet a department needs with explicit KPIs and incorporate specific communication tools.
